Cameron Sinclair

PechaKucha Daily

And now for one of the presentations that capped the entire “Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti” event, Architecture for Humanity’s Cameron Sinclair walking us, step by step and in detail, on what exactly is required in order to rebuild Haiti.

The PechaKucha Presentation WAVE for Haiti started on 20th February in Auckland, New Zealand and 117 cities and 20 hours later it ended in San Francisco where Cameron Sinclair, founder of Architecture For Humanity, was ready to give one of the final PechaKucha Presentations on this amazing day for Haiti. Take it away Cameron!

And again, just a reminder that donations are still being accepted to help with the reconstruction efforts.

GEA-SAR

PechaKucha Daily

Today we bring two Haiti-related presentations to the PechaKucha Daily blog, starting with GEA-SAR’s “57 hours later…” presentation, shown at the PechaKucha Night in Istanbul on the night of our “Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti” event.

GEA-SAR arrived in Port Au Prince-Haiti from Turkey 57 hours after the Haiti Eartquake. As soon as the team arrived at the city, they started to work on the debris of the biggest supermarket of the city. GEA-SAR operated 6 days working with the US SFTF2 team on the debris of the Caribbean Market and saved 5 lives.

Problems for Lars Vilks

PechaKucha Daily

PechaKucha Night in Gothenburg organizer Jesper Larsson sends us this bit of terrifying news regarding one of the city’s previous presenters, artist Lars Vilks.

Threatened Swedish artist and previous PechaKucha Gothenburg presenter (Pecha Kucha GBG Vol #10) Lars Vilks says he’s not exactly “shaking with fear” despite the news from Ireland that police there on Tuesday arrested seven people for allegedly plotting to kill the Swede for a drawing he created three years ago which depicted the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog.

You can read more about the story here and here, and there’s also a Wikipedia entry on the topic. Vilks was a presenter at PKN Gothenburg Vol. 10, where he talked about his amazing “Nimis” installation (pictured).

Poster for PKN Istanbul Vol. 4

PechaKucha Daily

Istanbul is getting ready for its PechaKucha Night Vol. 4, happening March 18 at Hayal Kahvesi Bistro. Presenters set to appear include a designer (Raif Kurt), a glass blower (Hafize Uncuoglu), a technologist (Burak Bayburtlu), an anthropologist (Lisa DiCarlo), a lighting expert (Emre Gunes), and a 3D animator (Altug Demircioglu) — visit the official event page for more info, and details in Turkish can be found here.

Ryuji Nakamura

PechaKucha Daily

Following our Spanish presentation, here’s one in Japanese by designer Ryuji Nakamura, given at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 69. Ryuji walks us through a few of his works, including the beautiful butterfly cage pictured above.

Nicolas Uribe

PechaKucha Daily

Today we’re going to highlight a couple of presentations NOT in English, in part to remind everyone that a PechaKucha presentation can be just as lively no matter the language, and whether you understand what is being said or not. Let’s kick things off then with Nicolas Uribe who presented his “Better than Picasso” in Spanish at last month’s PKN Bogota Vol. 6, which was held during our big “Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti” event. The city was able to raise more than $1,500 for the cause, and please feel free to add to the sum if you enjoy Nicolas’ presentation.

PKN Marseille Vol. 10

PechaKucha Daily

What does a PechaKucha Night in Marseille look like? This video round-up of last month’s Vol. 10 (held February 26) gives you a pretty good idea. Also, organizer Sarah Carriere-Chardon has put together an album of photos from the event up on Facebook — and if you want to stay updated on all things PKN Marseille, make sure to register for the newsletter on the official city page, as well as check in on the Facebook group.

Martin Willers

PechaKucha Daily

As we kick off a new week of presentation highlights — you do know that we have a terrific “Presentations” section on the site, right? — with “Sketch Book of Life,” presented by Martin Willers at PechaKucha Night in Stockholm Vol. 21.

An amazing presentation of sketches, which show how to use the inspiration of life to lift the possibilities of humanity to new heights! Brilliant — thanks Martin!

PKN Bangalore Vol. 4

PechaKucha Daily

Bangalore’s fourth PechaKucha Night was held just a few days after the “Global PechaKucha Night in Haiti,” and from what we hear, it was a great one. Here then are a few photos from PKN Bangalore Vol. 4, sent to us by the city’s organizers.

PKN Raglan Vol. 1

PechaKucha Daily

Raglan recently hosted its very first PechaKucha Night, and here now is a look at how things went courtesy of a report sent in by organizer Rodger Gallagher.

Last night’s first PechaKucha Night at the Old School Arts Centre was a great success with standing room only in the theatre room. The evening started with David Wimmer giving his presentation on the work that he and Frank did in Samoa helping the Samoans rebuild ‘upstairs’ after the tsunami. Dirk de Ruysscher covered the very interesting bike ride he has developed to the Nikau cave near Port Waikato. The trip includes harbour crossing and two days riding on metal roads with some amazing scenery along the way and of course an unspoilt cave at the overnight stop. Jean Carbon finished the first half with her presentation on traditional textiles along the Silk Road. The ‘Beer Break’ proved very popular and it was difficult to get the audience back for the second half.

Pieter ten Broek’s photos of board and kite sports around Raglan drew gasps of amazement from the audience. Wanda Barker provided a contrast with her history of Femme Art and the proposition that it needs to be revitalised. Hilary Ramage covered creative development through a series of prints. Finishing the night was Jon Berczley who took us right from the seed through to putting food on the plate with his gardening passion.

Arts Council Chairperson, Rodger Gallagher said that the PechaKucha Night was one of the most successful events held at the Arts Centre and everybody is keen for the next evening on the 4th June.

Full list of presenters:

- David Wimmer on the rebuilding work he helped with after the Samoan tsunami
– Amanda Watson on creating her paintings
– Dirk de Ruysscher on mountain biking around Whaingaroa
– Rodger Gallagher on the evolving architecture and use of the Old School since 1883 — including 1st public viewing of plans recently discovered in the National Archives
– Linda Holmes on favourite photos
– Jean Carbon on textiles along the Silk Road
– Pieter ten Broek on surfing, kite and skate boarding in Raglan
– Wanda Barker on Femme Art
– Yann Bordier on living and sailing in the Caribbean
– Sioux Swann on Ruapuke Sunsets
– Hilary Ramage on creative printmaking
– Jon Berczely on seeds

Below, a look at the flyer for PKN Raglan Vol. 1.

Flyer for PKN Porto Vol. 4

PechaKucha Night in Porto Vol. 4 happens this coming Saturday (March 13) at the Biblioteca Publica Municipal do Porto. We’re including the flyer for the event, where you’ll find more details in Spanish.

Flyer for PKN Guadalajara Vol. 7

PechaKucha Daily

Guadalajara’s next PechaKucha Night (Vol. 7) is just around the corner, set to happen March 16 at Pare de Sufrir. As with all PKNs this month, donations to the “PechaKucha for Haiti” efforts will still be welcomed.

Donations at PKN Osnabrueck Vol. 5

PechaKucha Daily

PKN Osnabrueck organizer Clemens Gruber sends in this update following this week’s Vol. 5 event.

PechaKucha Osnabrueck was part of the “Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti” with a presentation from Robert Buss about the “Disposable Office.” Some ideas for sustainable, cheap, but pretty furniture — this was the brainwork of our support! At our 5th PKN we did the financial side, as ideas only cannot build a school or office. We raised $211.29.

As with other cities, let us remind everyone that you can still go to any city page and donate directly there to show your support.

Following Up in Concepcion

PechaKucha Daily

Here’s a follow-up from PKN Concepcion organizer Alejandra Sepulveda on what has happened around her. Despite the devastating photos of her neighborhood she sent us, she does leave us with some positive thoughts.

Send you some pics of the disaster… Yesterday I managed to communicate with my partner in the PKN team… so great news! My building will have to topple. I am very lucky to be writing today…

Thank you very much for the concern. I would not know what to ask for, I need to rent a new house… and smile at life… many people today did not see the sun (802 dead). But I have dreams, and happiness to be alive…

PKN Launches in San Sebastian

PechaKucha Daily

PechaKucha Night is about to launch in San Sebastian — well, more specifically just down the road in Donostia — with the first event set to happen next week (March 11). The city page is not up yet but should be updated shortly, so please check the “PechaKucha Night” section of the site for more details in the coming days.

Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham

PechaKucha Daily

We continue to upload plenty of presentations to the site, and one of the latest was taken from last week’s PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 70, featuring our dear PK co-founders Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham walking us through the entire “Global PechaKucha Day for Haiti” event.

Thank you all for making the “Global PechaKucha Night for Haiti” a huge success. Over 117 events took place during the 24hr PechaKucha Presentation WAVE — and we almost spoke to everyone, ahem! Fantastically over $42,000 has been raised to date — thats almost to our first target of $50,000 which buys a school.

Photos from PKN Osnabrueck

PechaKucha Daily

Since we’re revisiting older PechaKucha Night events, here’s also a few photos from previous PKNs in Osnabrueck. The latest (Vol. 5) was held last night, so hopefully we’ll get some new photos soon as well.

Revisiting PKN Aalen

PechaKucha Daily

The organizers of PechaKucha Night in Aalen have recently uploaded photos from their first three volumes to a Flickr photoset, which you’ll find here. The latest event — Vol. 2, because we’re counting last month’s Haiti event as well — was held earlier this week, and organizer Thomas Maile tells us he had a great turnout, with 120 showing up. Two events in just over a week, that’s quite something — we did the same here in Tokyo, although with only 3 short days in between. Here’s also a piece on Aalen’s PKN (in German), published in the Schwabische Post.
