PKN Dawson Vol. 1

PechaKucha Daily

Even a town with a population of 1,500 isn’t too small for a healthy dose of PechaKucha Night action, and that’s just what Yukon’s Dawson City was able to enjoy last week for the first time. Organizer Michael Edwards reports.

PKN Dawson City #1 was an incredible experience, with a capacity house that raved about the event afterwards.

Two things to know about Dawson City: there is a population of 1500, and people always (always) show up late for events. And yet, on Friday night, there was a line-up at the door by 19:30! We ended up with an audience of about 75, which is amazing for a new event in a town of this size — most of the audience had never even heard of PechaKucha.

Every presenter did an amazing job. There were lots of laughs, some beautiful images, and a bunch of new ideas to think about. The room was packed, the energy was great, and we sold every drop of beer and wine.

As organizers, the most satisfying thing about the night was seeing the audience realize that anyone can get up there and be a PKN presenter. People really understood the appeal of the 20 X 20 format, and are looking forward to the next event.

PKN Dawson City #2 is scheduled for late June, 2009.

Weitere Infos folgen.

PKN Nagano Vol. 7

PechaKucha Daily

PechaKucha Night was back in Nagano prefecture earlier this month — in the city of Matsumoto to be more exact — with another great turnout, even garnering some press in the area’s Shinshu newspaper. The list of presenters was an eclectic one — as is the norm at a PKN event — with media artists and fashion students joining forces with a kimono coordinator, an apple farmer, and even one guy looking for a wife.

Below, a few images from PKN Nagano Vol. 7. The next edition is set for May 30.

Deborah Fisher of 21st Century Plowshare

PechaKucha Daily

When Deborah Fisher describes her site 21st Century Plowshare — “an inspiration-station and resource hub for anyone who wants to deploy environmental actions that matter” — you already get a feeling that the site acts as a manifesto in the making, and that’s just what attendees were presented with during her presentation at last week’s PechaKucha Night in New York (Vol. 6).

Lucky for us who weren’t able to attend, Deborah offers a condensed version of her talk, in which she shares her hypothesis that “environmental action should delight people.”

PKN Is Your Source of Inspiration

PechaKucha Daily

Coverage from last week’s PechaKucha Night in New York has been spreading far and wide through the webscape, and I have to say I’m quite fond of the title from this post at Edificial:

I Went to PechaKucha And All I Got Was This Nagging Sense That I Should Be Doing More With My Life

Words to live by.

PKN Tokyo Vol. 60

PechaKucha Daily

PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 60 was celebrated in style, with another packed house — close to 400 in attendance — and a terrific lineup of presenters who all contributed to a night that would make any PKN organizer proud. With video wishes from other cities, it really felt like a global affair, topped with the news that the PKN city count is now at 181!

Below, a few photos from the night’s presentations — as always, we’ll be featuring the presenters and their projects here at PechaKucha Daily in the weeks to come.

PechaKucha Head

PechaKucha Daily

To help celebrate this week’s 60th edition of PechaKucha Night in Tokyo, we received a few video messages from other PKN cities that were then shown during the event on Wednesday. PKN Gothenburg, on the other hand, produced this PKN web app (based on original source code by Mr. Doob). Now everyone gets to be a PechaKucha head!

PKN in the Japan Times, the Article

PechaKucha Daily

As a follow-up to our post the other day on the piece in The Japan Times, here’s a scan of the article — half a page!

Lukas Birk

PechaKucha Daily

Lukas Birk is an Austrian artist currently based in Beijing, and at the most recent PechaKucha Night in Bejing (Vol. 48), he talked about his “Kafkanistan” project. From PKN Beijing organizer Alessandra Henderson:

On February 28th at Vol. 48 Pecha Kucha Beijing, Lukas Birk presented to the crowd his project “Kafkanistan.” Over the course of three years, artist Lukas Birk and anthropologist Sean Foley traveled to Afghanistan as tourists in one of the most publicized war torn areas. In Birk’s words: “… it all started with an email sent to me by anthropologist Sean Foley asking if I wanted to join him exploring the world of tourism in conflict zones around Pakistan and Afghanistan. Our first 4 week trip turned into a three year project resulting in a book, three films, and a multimedia exhibition.”

You can find out more about the project here. Below, a few images from the presentation.

PKN Budapest Vol. 11

PechaKucha Daily

PechaKucha Night in Budapest Vol. 11 — which took place last month — attracted an amazing crowd that numbered well over 600. That city’s organizer, Attila Bujdoso, sends in a few photos from the event (courtesy of Kiss Gergely and Toth Mate).

PKN New York Vol. 6

PechaKucha Daily

Just how big was PechaKucha Night in New York Vol. 6? How about a sold-out crowd of 700, which included NYC luminaries like Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson. We’ll have more photos from the event in a few days, but for now, here’s a nice write-up of all the night’s presenters.
