PechaKucha Night is enjoying a lot of attention in Edmonton — the city’s mayor is even a fan — and organizer Christine Causing points us to this group pool of photos from the last edition, held in February. Vol. 4 is set to take place in June during ICLEI, a world conference on sustainability — conference delegates will be invited to do PKN presentations.

PechaKucha Night hit the city of Beijing late last month for a ninth time, attracting over 300 at that city’s Factory 798 art hub. One of the organizers, Alessandra Hendersen, contributes this report:
On February 28, Pecha Kucha Beijing hosted its ninth edition at the Yan Club Arts Center in Factory 798, a former industrial complex turned art hub where the most avant-garde contemporary art galleries and studios are found alongside hip cafes and design spaces. Attended by well over 300 of the most curious types in Beijing, PK BJ Edition 9 featured compelling talks from artists, architects, designers, film industry insiders and more. While the audience hung over the gallery’s balustrade and vied for space on the tiered steps, the ten speakers dazzled with black and white photographic images of Afghanistan, the symbiotic relationship between religion and brand, sneak peaks of short films created by the most cutting edge Chinese directors, and so on. We were even lucky enough to import a fellow Pecha Kucha-ite from our Japanese counterparts, Mr. Satoshi Ohashi of Zaha Hadid architects, an organizer in Hamamatsu, Japan.
One of the most exciting speeches of the night came from Ilya Rozhdestvensky, Managing Director of ONEDREAMRUSH, a project featuring 42 short films of 42 seconds each by world famous directors. More information on his project can be found at www.42×42.com.
Above and below, images from one of Satoshi Ohashi’s projects, followed by a few images taken from Ilya Rozhdestvensky’s presentation. PKN Beijing Vol. 10 will take place May 23.

Product designer Michio Akita presented a few of his designs — and expanded on the process behind some of them — during his presentation at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 59. You can read more about his design method — only in Japanese though — at his site.
Below, a few of the images shown during his presentation. Above, one of Akita’s products for Takeda Design Project’s Primario line.

We have another poster today, this time for last month’s PechaKucha Night in Columbus Vol. 8. For more on that event, read our report.

Based in a tiny village outside of Tokyo, Roberto De Vido creates comics that cover everything from politics to sports, with a bit of everyday life mixed in. In this post, some of the works shown during his presentation at PechaKucha Night in Tokyo Vol. 59.

Below, pages from a project initiated with photographer Masaru Goto to highlight the plight of HIV/AIDS in Cambodia.

Berlin has posted all of the presentations from its most recent PechaKucha Night — Vol. 12, held in January — using a player that lets you watch the images full-screen and accompanied by the audio. There’s even a timer that counts down the 20 seconds for each slide.

To call Min Mae a living treasure seems about right- since launching her Tableau Vivant series in the Capital a couple of years back she has brought all the right elements to the city- danger, beauty, humour, etc. All this and more (much more infact!) will again be on show in her latest offering, titled ‘I Die’. Read all about it, in Min’s words…
I Die is a tableau vivant, a living picture created by Min Mae in collaboration with twelve writers, one musician, twelve muses, and their loved ones.I Die is born of the desire for understanding the impact of death, of dying, of loss, of change. It offers no answers, but lays bare the questionings of it’s seventy or more contributors.Words by; Maria Fleming, Monica Carroll, Hal Judge, Emma Gibson, Nat Burke, Chanel Cole, Anne-Maree Author, Joan Cornish, David Finigan, Adam Hadley, Andrew Galan, and Naomi Milthorpe.
Music by; Grahame Thompson
Muses; will remain unnamed til the event.
Their will be two showings, first at 7pm, then again at 8pm. Tickets are available at the door. $15/ $10 for CCAS members.
I Die is presented as part of the CCAS performance program. Contains nudity.
For more information check out the CCAS site.

PechaKucha Night was back in Columbus last month for an eighth edition. Held at Landmark’s Gateway Theater and with a superb turnout of more than 225, here’s a report from that city’s organizer Lindsay Kenzig, including quotes from some of the presenters:
First of all, we had an amazing event. The energy was great and we had one of our best attended events — about 225 people, but I think we lost count in the rush at the door. We had an amazing variety of presenters who all had unique things to talk about. Prior to the event, we had several articles written, which helped draw a crowd that had previously been unaware of the event in our city.
Our first presenter, Helen Hoffelt, had this to say about her photography:
“For us to rise, we have to let go. What weighs us down has to be left behind. Sometimes, what is left behind can be compassionately incorporated into who we are. As we fly, we create a new sense ourselves. We need to pay attention to what our lives teach us. When we do that I believe we all can fly.”
Cyrus Fire, an artist, said: “It was a one of the most exciting nights of my life.” He suggests PKN organizers work with presenters hands-on ahead of the event (for example, helping presenters with breathing techniques).
Zaineb Alani presented her work as an Iraqi poet. Her poetry was amazing and very moving. She says that PechaKucha was “a unique opportunity to voice an insight into the ‘other side’ in a setting that greatly enhanced the content of my delivery.”
Matt Meindl talked about his film Digital Underpants: “It’s a manic stop-motion animated collage made from hundreds of real teenage love notes.” On PKN, he “liked the diverse presentations but also the general atmosphere that made it OK to be honest, vulnerable, creative, and silly.”
Other presenters included: Matt Carbone, an architectural photographer; Matt Meindl, a filmmaker who presented 20 short film clips; Artie Isaac who talked about the democratization of public speaking and his new website SpeakerSite; Reza Reyazi, an urban planner speaking about Columbus’ oldest neighborhood Franklinton; Walker Evans, who spoke about his work on the site ColumbusUnderground; artist John Sherman Lathram III, who is working on a new book about body modification; Corey Aumiller, an artist who presented “20 Irrational Fears”; and Kristy Yosick, a master chocolatier.
The press coverage mentioned appeared in Columbus Alive and Metromix. PKN Columbus Vol. 9 is set for May 21.

The following images — shown during PechaKucha Night Vol. 59 in Tokyo — tell the story of a young man with special powers. Yes, we are indeed talking about Spider-Man, but here we examine the power of the costume in a project conducted by the masked super-hero and photographer Paulette Waltz all over the city of Tokyo.

Although we are rather fond of Apple’s Keynote, Germany’s Spiegel Online does have a nice way of describing PechaKucha Night presenters in its piece on the event’s presence in Germany: “Popstars des Powerpoint.”
For your next taste of PKN in Germany, check out Frankfurt’s Vol. 10 next week (March 12) at Palmengarten.

Following yesterday’s look at the beautiful PechaKucha Night posters from Chattanooga, today we give you a peek at the poster used to promote the first ever PKN to happen in the city of Gdansk. Vol. 1 will be held tomorrow (Saturday, March 7) at the Wyspa Institute of Art.
